If you are planning to get married in Sweden, there are some things you need to do well in advance. For example, order a Certificate of No Impediment and buy wedding rings. The local tax office issues the Certificate of No Impediment testing. It costs nothing.

No impediment test in time

Those who plan to get married are wise to apply for a Certificate of No Impediment in time. It costs nothing if you plan to get married in Sweden. You apply for the Certificate of No Impediment at the Swedish Tax Agency. The processing time is usually two weeks, but it can be significantly longer if many are to apply for the certificate at the same time. It often happens in the spring and summer. And also on special dates when it is popular to get married. The Swedish Tax Agency can, for example, receive a large number of applications for Certificates of No Impediment for midsummer, Christmas and New Year. The certificate is valid for four months.

The Certificate of No Impediment means that the Swedish Tax Agency tests and certifies that there is no obstacle for the persons requesting to marry. As an official agency, they issue a legal certificate to that effect. Impediments to a Swedish marriage are if one of the applicants already is married to another or is under 18 years of age. The parties must also not be closely related to each other. Approx. 50.000 couples apply for a Certificate of No Impediment in Sweden every year.

Changing surname

In Sweden, you keep your last name when you get married if you do not apply for the name change before the marriage or later apply to the Tax Agency to change it. If you want to change your last name in connection with the wedding, you can request the name change when it is registered. Such a name change is free of charge, but you can only change your partner’s last name then, his or hers.

Impediments

According to Swedish law, there are the following obstacles to getting married:

In Sweden, you can not get married if you are under 18 years old.

You are not allowed to marry each other if you are closely related.

Of course, you can not get married if you are already married or a registered partner.

These obstacles apply to anyone who wants to get married in Sweden, even if you are not a Swedish citizen or do not live in Sweden.

Certificates

When the Certificate of No Impediment test is ready, you will receive a certificate of obstacle test and a marriage certificate from the Swedish Tax Agency. The certificates are sent home to the applicant and are valid for four months. If you do not get married within four months, you will need to make a new application for an obstacle test before the wedding.

Contact the wedding organizer well in advance of your wedding. You must show both certificates to the wedding organizer. Keep in mind that many wedding organizers, such as municipalities, may need to have these early to plan the wedding. After the wedding, the wedding organizer fills in the certificates and sends them to the Swedish Tax Agency.
