How to make the best wedding pictures
Having a photographer who takes wedding photos is, of course, the best way to guarantee fantastic wedding photos. But, the wedding photographer is usually not present during both the ceremony and the party, and it is great fun to have lots of pictures of absolutely everything.
Ask a close friend or relative to take care of the wedding photography
Wedding photography consists of three parts: before the wedding, the ceremony and after the wedding. If you are the one who will be in charge of taking the pictures at the wedding, read on!
Prepare and plan
Most important of all is to make sure that you have enough battery, preferably also an external power bank and memory cards. If you borrow camera equipment, you must practice a little and get used to handling the camera. Take sample photos. Talk to the bride and groom and find out what preparations they will make and when. Join them as they buy their wedding bands, try on shoes and clothes, choose flowers, visit the hairdresser, etc. and take lots of pictures.
Visit the venue for the ceremony and celebration and plan the photo shooting. Think about the light. Outdoors, you take the best pictures early in the day and late in the afternoon, when the daylight is softer. It is difficult to take good close-ups with direct sunlight because people squint when the light is bright and strong. Talk to the wedding organizer so that you can place yourself in a good place during the ceremony and take the best pictures without disturbing the wedding.
Choose a beautiful place for a successful photography session.
Find a place that the wedding couple like for a posed photo shooting between the ceremony and the celebration. It can be anywhere depending on what you have in mind: a park, an impressive building or by the sea. Visit the selected location in advance to check the light conditions at the time of the shooting. Shoot some sample photos so you can study what works best.
The wedding!
You may not be a professional photographer, but you have something that no professional has, despite their experience. You know the bride and groom and probably also many of the guests, or at least many of them. How does that help you? The most important thing on a day like this is the emotions. You may not take technically perfect photos, but the fact of knowing the couple well makes it easier for you to capture their true story and feelings.
If you can, take pictures of both the bride and groom as they prepare and dress before the wedding. If it is not possible to spend some time with both, focus on the bride.
Photograph the details
Take detailed pictures of everything: the bride’s hairstyle, the flowers, the wedding rings, the details on the tables, the hands, the food, the wedding cake, the guests.
Now it’s time to take lots of improvised pictures. The posing ended at the photo session earlier. Take photos from different angles and perspectives, preferably without the bride and groom or the guests looking directly into the camera lens. Be creative and use the elements found in the surroundings to frame the pictures: furniture, mirrors, or even use architectural elements. Try to take a picture of all the guests. It may be a difficult task. But if you succeed, it will be an incredible memory for your just married friends.
Share the photos on Instagram
Create an Instagram account and publish the best photos there. It’s an easy way to let family and friends see all the pictures. Read about how to Instagram the wedding.
After the wedding
When the bride and groom return home after the honeymoon, you can do one last photo session. Some call this photo session to Trash the Dress, as some brides do so literally. Some splash into seawater, some step around in the mud. The imagination here has no limits. The “trash the dress” session has become increasingly common over the last ten years, especially in the UK. The symbolism is that you no longer need the wedding dress. These pictures tend to be spectacular, even if you plan to wash the wedding dress when you have finished and save it forever.
Good luck with the wedding photo shooting!
