When to take the rings off!
When you see your engagement ring or wedding ring on your finger for the first time, you might think that you never want to take it off again. It’s easy to understand. But if you want your rings to stay beautiful for many years, it’s best to take them off in certain situations.
Here are some of the moments when you should take the rings off
When cooking
Cooking with rings on your fingers is not a good idea. The dirt easily builds up, especially if the ring has embedded stones. The ring may slip off as you wash up the dishes and disappear in the sink. Lemon juice, vinegar and salt are some of the things you often use when cooking, and none of them are the ring’s best friends.
When cleaning
Do not expose your rings to chemicals such as ammonia, bleach or detergents. Anything you use to clean can damage and discolour your rings, or corrode both surface and stones. Also, it is easy to hit furniture and edges when cleaning. Be extra careful when cleaning bathrooms and kitchen as cleaning agents used in wet rooms are especially aggressive and corrosive.
When you exercise and work-out
Some materials such as gold and platinum are slightly soft metals, and they can become deformed if they get under pressure, like when training with weights. If the ring has diamonds, these can come loose if the ring changes its shape. Any sport and physical activity that you practice with your hands can damage your rings.
When swimming in the pool or the sea
Never swim in the sea or the pool with your rings. Chlorine and saltwater are not something you should expose the rings to if you want them to stay nice and shiny for many years. Besides, the fingers shrink slightly if the water is cold and then it is easier to drop the rings, without even noticing. It’s also easy to lose the rings on the beach. Sand can also cause damage to the ring and make it dull, just like sandpaper.
When you shower
Showering with the ring on your finger can seem completely harmless. Many people think that they clean the ring while they wash. But no, it’s not at all harmless. When you soap yourself, the ring can collect soap debris, it also can slip off and go down the drain. All products you use when you have finished showering can affect the shine of your rings. Perfume, body lotion, aftershave…
When using hand cream
Hand cream is not something that will ruin your ring immediately. But it can accumulate as a fat layer in the ring’s pattern or the stones’ setting. Over time, the ring may lose its shine, and you may have to clean it with a brush or metal detergent that can damage the ring’s shiny surface.
