Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th?

According to a legend, Emperor Claudius II forbade his soldiers to get married. The decision was based on the belief that men should avoid emotional family relations to become better and braver soldiers. A young priest decided to ignore the ban and decided to marry the loving couple secretly. The emperor found out and sentenced Valentinus to death. He was executed on February 14th, year 270, which, according to that theory, started Valentine’s Day celebrations on that same date. 

Why we celebrate Valentines

But that is not the only theory about the international origin of Valentine’s Day and Valentine’s traditions. Some point to the 16th century when George Chaucer wrote a poem entitled Parliament of Birds, in which Valentine’s Day is mentioned as a day to celebrate love. From that moment on, it began to be celebrated. History tells us that the celebration became commercial from the 19th century onwards when Esther Howland designed her famous postcards to congratulate loved ones.

Valentine’s is celebrated on the 14th of February

The day’s name is Valentine, after the Roman saint we mentioned earlier, about whom very little is known. Some theories say that he is remembered from the Middle Ages. February 14th was then considered the date when birds formed couples. In England and France, village boys and girls were designated as pretend couples for a year on Valentine’s Day.

The first Valentine’s Day signage in Sweden was made in the 1950s, and since then has become a popular tradition. It is common to send messages and give chocolates and flowers to loved ones. Celebrations on February 14 became widespread in Sweden in the mid-1980s. At that time, Valentine’s Day began to be written into Swedish school books. In many Swedish schools, the date was marked by students giving each other cards or flowers. Today, Valentine’s Day has very little to do with its religious background. Today it is more a version of the American version of “Valentine’s Day”.
