What is Zirconium?
Zirconium is an incredibly durable and scratch resistant metal and is completely allergy free. Zirconium, not to be misstaken with the artificial diamonds Cubic Zirconia, is slightly easier to shape than ductile titanium and tungsten, which are harder to work with in the workshop. The original color of zirconium is gray-white, but the black tone has become popular in the making of zirconiumrings. Black zirconiumrings are created when the metal is heated for several hours and a chemical reaction with oxygen occurs on the surface of the ring. The black surface can then be polished to glossy or matte.
Zirconium was discovered in 1789 by Martin Heinrich Klaproth. Pure Zirconium was not prepared until 1914. It is extracted from a dark sooty powder that becomes beautiful rings and jewellery, components for nuclear reactors and knee replacements. The most common use for zirconium today is actually, believe it or not, for fireworks.
